SYNOPSIS:
KATE ALLEN (20s) is an aspiring young novelist who’s working at a bookstore. Her novel, DEATH METROPOLITAN STYLE, has been rejected by a series of publishing companies, and Kate is struggling in all aspects of her life.
Sharing an apartment with her gay roommate JOE (20s), Kate can barely pay her rent which has just been raised - again. Kate seeks help from her wealthy parents, HAROLD and LILY ALLEN (50s), who insist that it's time for Kate to take charge of her life.
Meanwhile, Kate clashes with her Beverly Hills High School rival, TRACY REDSTONE (20s), who runs her own successful interior design firm and is engaged to be married. Taking great pleasure in calling Kate a failure, Tracy doubts that Kate will show up to their upcoming Beverly Hills High School reunion. "Oh, I'm going to that reunion,” Kate insists. “Be afraid, Redstone. Be very afraid!"
Enter AUNT BUNNY (50s), Kate's wealthy fashion designer aunt who meets with Kate and will give her a financial check on one condition. "You should be out in the world, darling!" Meeting men! Dating! Thinking about marriage,” Aunt Bunny tells Kate, who reluctantly agrees to go on a blind date with a MICHAEL HOSEBAUM (30s), a handsome corporate finance executive who Aunt Bunny met at a charity fundraiser.
Meeting Michael for lunch in Beverly Hills, Kate finds him wildly attractive. Kate is about to pour her heart out when Michael stops her, explaining that he's unavailable due to complications with his ex-wife. Kate feels utterly humiliated.
“I have no life. I’m broke. I have no career,” Kate laments to Aunt Bunny, who braces herself as Kate is about to announce a monumental decision. “I have decided that I, Kate Allen, right this very moment... am officially going corporate!" A jubilant Aunt Bunny joins Kate in this celebratory moment.
A montage shows a determined, confident Kate walking among the corporate high-rise buildings in Century City.
Aunt Bunny's finagling helps Kate land a job as a book publishing executive at the same corporation where Michael Hosebaum is a finance executive. Kate and Michael have a brief romance that derails due to his obsession with work and talking business on his cell phone.
Kate is a success for the first time in her life, but her major shift from creative to corporate destroys her decades-long friendship with her musician best friend SUZANNE (20s).
Making a book deal with 19-year-old author TINA BLODGETT, whose novel GIRL FABULOUS is #1 on the New York Times Bestseller List, leaves Kate angry at where she has taken her own life.
Ultimately realizing that she has sold out her creative dreams, Kate quits her corporate job and passionately rewrites her novel, DEATH METROPOLITAN STYLE, which is published in hardcover.
Proudly holding her newly-published novel, Kate goes with Suzanne to a luxury hotel where their Beverly Hills High School is being held. Congratulated outside the hotel by her father and Aunt Bunny, Kate then walks toward the hotel with Suzanne when they're confronted by Tracy Redstone. “The book looks fake," Tracy quips, leading to a vicious catfight between Kate and Tracy that shockingly culminates in a passionate kiss before a stunned Suzanne.
Dusting off their hair and clothes, Kate and Tracy then link arms with Suzanne as they share a knowing smile. "Let's go in," beams Kate, who, proudly holding her novel, happily walks with Tracy and Suzanne to their Beverly Hills High School reunion.
