Fighting For Justice

The feature documentary focusses on the reluctance of the criminal justice system to charge anybody with 'hate crime'.

Imam Maulama Akonjee and his close associate, Thara Uddin were killed last year in a broad daylight in Queens. Fighting for justice follows the Akonjee family, particularly his son Saif, who has been thrust in the new role of head of their devastated family, deferring his dreams for a career in order to provide and care for their mother, siblings, and children.

The film follows them as they wait for the impending trial against his killer and why they believe their father’s murder should be treated as an anti-Muslim hate crime. The accused, Oscar Morel, has been charged with first- and second-degree murder, as well as criminal weapons possession, but not a hate crime.

Their family members and community members question the administration about why the state is so reluctant to charge the accused witThe feature documentary focusses on the reluctance of the criminal justice system to charge anybody with 'hate crime'.
