Come the months of October and November and the entire North India is choked by the smoke emerging from the blaze intentionally set in the fields of Punjab and Haryana by farmers. This, which seems like an everlasting problem, has some practical solutions, which the Governments have overlooked for many years and let this problem aggravate year after year at the cost of health of entire generation.

This documentary is about this very serious problem of stubble burning. The documentary has touched all the aspects of this issue which has environmental, social, financial and health implications. It has incorporated the views of all the stakeholders including the farmers, who burn the stubble and also the farmers who do not burn it, the Government officials, whose responsibility is to check this menace providing alternative solutions and the Government officials, responsible for implementation of NGT ( National Green Tribunal) orders regarding banning of stubble burning in the fields, also, the views of Environmental activists have been incorporated. This documentary has tried to find the impact of environmental degradation by stubble burning on the health of public in general and rural masses in particular, and, has also tried to provide some practical solutions to stop this menace, with a final conclusion in the end.

Director Biography - Utsav Arora

A filmmaker from Amritsar, Punjab. He completed his graduation in animation and multimedia from Guru Nanak Dev University and moved to Canada for his higher studies.

During his four-year graduation, in his second year he wrote, shot, and directed a 3-minute short documentary based on Swachh Bharat which was screened at National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) in 2017. His first source of income was Rs.20,000 came as a cash prize with the screening. His family was proud but most importantly it was the day he found his calling and ever since he has been involved and has been dedicated to making films.

Under the banner of Lemon Stack, he and his two other friends made many short films and music videos for various university bands. He was the pioneer of a film club in his University called WeChitramala in which he arranged screenings of world cinema and workshops for film enthusiasts. Later the film club hosted a national film festival in 2019. Avlokan (2017) was the first 30 minutes short film that he wrote, shot, and directed with professional actors which helped him gain hype in his city among artists and media.

He with his team at Lemon Stack went onto making a short controversial documentary to uplift the financial conditions of farmers in Punjab, targeting the wrongdoings of the Government. It was called Akk Chabbna Pena (2017), it won 7 awards and 8 official selections at several national film festivals like the 8th National Science Film Festival (2018) and international film festivals like European Cinematography Awards (ECA, 2019).

In 2018, Lemon stack was changed to Odd Men Films and was registered, the first film under production was Parwaaz, a short fundraiser docudrama for deaf and blind children’s school, Utsav was the cinematographer of that film. The realization to study the art before getting into it came from attending two 30 days of FTII courses on writing and cinematography which agape him about the vast and extraordinary field of filmmaking, and he decided to come to Canada and pursue film production at Confederation College.

He is currently studying and making films there.
