Director Biography - Simon Fox

Fox started out writing for theatre at the age of 17 before moving on to creating short films once DSLR Filmmaking opened up the possibilities of creating high production value for low costs. Seizing the opportunity he began working on a scripted comedy/drama web series for broadcast via YouTube, building up his experience and network as the years went on. The show, titled Metalhedz, went on to be nominated for Best International Comedy at the Miami Web Fest in 2016 and to be selected again for the Miami Web Fest in 2017, playing before judges from HBO and NBC.
From there Fox went on to direct several short films, always experimenting in different styles and genres so as to best refine his craft. Being a big supporter of independent films in Scotland, Fox organises and runs a showcase night at a local bar in Edinburgh where he invites local filmmakers to submit their work for display, hosts a Question and Answer session with them in front of an audience of fellow creatives and film fans, and then encourages networking in the bar afterwards.

Director Statement

This has been a passion project of mine for some years now, and the story of its progression has been quite interesting. Originally the idea came about with the intent of creating a self-contained short story involving the characters of Cassie and Karen with a group of other survivors; all men. I liked the idea of this boiling pot of tension which would reflect the dangers that females have to face every single day, showing that it doesn’t matter whether it’s the end of the world or a regular day at the office, women have a constant threat of attack.
The short was going to be self-contained inside one location, but as I thought more and more about these characters, this world and their story, I began to imagine more scenes beyond this refuge, and what they could encounter out in the remnants of this world. I began to work on a longer story until I had a feature length film on my hands. I knew that I couldn’t make it without a good budget, and so I refined the idea into a short film again, only this time focusing on the protagonist Cassie. I wanted to make use of the beautifully haunting Scottish landscape to really give a sense of isolation, and to give a taste of what the feature length story will be like.
