Through the Window
Through The Window is a character-driven short story about two thirteen year-old girls that share a home and a sleepless night of adventure. Charlotte (age 13) and Frankie (age 13) are unable to sleep. Charlotte, eager to prove that she is unpredictable, instructs Frankie to put on her shoes, refusing to explain what she has planned. She opens their bedroom window, climbs out, and tells Frankie to do the same. Charlotte then grabs Frankie’s wrist and leads her through the dark neighborhood and through the woods. They soon make it to a clearing: a cliff overlooking the forest with a view of the night sky. Frankie is in awe at their surroundings. The two sit down on the grass and discuss how meeting each other changed their lives. Charlotte and Frankie then lie back in the grass until the sun begins to rise over the horizon. The two begin their journey home, when they reach the park. Their jokes are cut short when they see a drunk man. He approaches them threateningly, but the girls are able to escape. The two girls head home. Their mom is not awake yet, and they both share warm smiles before turning off the lamp, and finally going to sleep.
