Born and raised in Rio De Janeiro, Gabriela Ledesma began a career as an actress at the age of five. She worked with South America’s most prominent network, TV Globo, appearing in Soap Operas, theatre, and voiceover work until the age of sixteen when she moved to the United States. At nineteen, Gabriela enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and served for 5 years, after which she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in filmmaking.
Gabriela has always strived to tackle modern social issues in her work, in an accessible but hard hitting fashion. Her previous work includes award winning shorts and documentaries that dive into tough subject matter with a unique and refreshing perspective. Her first feature film ‘Blue’ has been a huge success on the festival circuit amassing over 40 laurels from national and international festivals thus far.
Gabriela is the CEO of Poison Pictures and currently lives in Studio City with her wife and daughter.
BLUE is my first feature film. It’s close to my heart as Blue is inspired by my own story. I struggled with depression and anxiety for most of my life. I was considered successful even as a child, known in TV, voiceover, and competitive swimming. But despite my accomplishments, I was deeply unhappy and I attempted suicide at the age of 16. I went into a coma, and I was lucky enough to receive help and support from family and friends, doctors, and pushed myself to not only recover personally, but to help others facing the same crises.
This movie exists to bring together the topics we hide in the back of our minds; thoughts that are frightening, unwanted, and painful.
I want to push the boundaries but do so by inviting the audience in with humor, and hope, which exist in all of us no matter how grim the circumstances. I want to breach this subject matter that is so often ignored but felt world-wide. This isn’t an easy film to make, but it is the story I know- the struggle and the rise. Our goal is largely to educate and inform the audience about these serious and prevalent issues. But we believe it’s important to tell this story with light humor and a light heart, making it relatable to those who have not dealt with these issues, and hopeful for those who have.
