Clay Ayers took a strong interest in filmmaking as a student in the Story & Plot screenwriting classes taught by writer/director Tom Vaughan. He has assisted in film productions in various capacities around the Houston area, and continues today.
In 2012, he produced and directed adaptations of the cosmic horror short stories The Shadow on the Wall (by Mary Wilkins Freeman) and The Picture in the House (by H.P. Lovecraft). Both of these shorts screened at several film festivals and are available on-line.
In December 2013, Clay started production of his feature debut, Organizatsiya, which was written in the Story & Plot screenwriting class, and completed the film in 2015. Organizatsiya is currently available on-line.
Clay found the award-winning screenplay for Illusions of Cyn (formerly titled Original Cyn) written by Robert W. Hazel in 2014. Clay and collaborators Carrie Fitch and Trae Stanley began production shortly there after.
Clay grew up in Houston, graduated from The University of Texas and The University of Houston. He lives in Houston with his family.
I found the screenplay for Illusions of Cyn (formerly Original Cyn) on the InkTips website. I had just completed our first feature length film, Organizatsiya. I knew that we could do so many things better the second time around if I found an appealing screenplay.
Robert Hazel (Illusions of Cyn screenwriter) advertised the screenplay as an erotic, noir, sci-fi, romantic drama about a woman with a fecund imagination, a vibrant love life and a missing husband. This logline caught my attention, as well as all the screenplay awards received. And after reading the fantastic screenplay, I knew this was a story that needed to be told.
The movie comprises three separate, but interwoven storylines. Those being the world of Ace Investigations, a 1950’s film noir detective setting, the world of Ace Entertainment, a futuristic workplace where the staff develops realistic, on-line game-playing scenarios, and finally the “real world” of Cyn Gladdis, her husband, Nick and there friends, Brian and David.
Along with my producing partner, Carrie Fitch, we pulled together collaborators and resources to get the movie made. Because of the interwoven storylines, we felt there might be a potential for initial confusion for viewers. With this in mind we tried be consistent with costumes, coloring and tone in each of the worlds.
