BADASSERY
BADASSERY looks at the rise of the female DJ, and how their presence is unapologetically disrupting the Toronto hip-hop scene. The film covers the journey of some amazing women pursuing their passions in the male-dominated hip-hop arena. In doing so, it examines the social, political and cultural factors that enabled and empowered their success such as the growing economization of social media, the rise of independent artists, beauty as capital and other topics.

Sarafina McIntosh is a director, creative producer and music lover based in Toronto. McIntosh has been exposed to music her entire life from the smooth melodies of Hall & Oates to the hard-hitting lyricism of Nipsey Hussle. Growing up, she didn’t see much representation in the hip-hop scenes. As the tides turn and creative industries started to break barriers now is the time to amplify their stories. With an ear to the ground and a knack for crafting empowering stories. McIntosh is the perfect storm; her extensive network with female music creatives and creative vision marks the emerging filmmaker as a shoe-in storyteller. McIntosh’s mission is to demonstrate to hopeful young women who want a career within the music industry that it’s not only possible, but you can create space and redefine an industry on your own terms.
Sunita Miya-Muganza is a director and writer. A POV 3rd Street alumni, Sunita is passionate about telling beautiful and complex stories of the UNHEARD.
