FROM SEED TO SEED
In Southern Manitoba,Terry and Monique are pouring their hearts into a small, ecological farm. In love with the land, their methods are derived from generations of farming tradition, along with the best current knowledge of organic farming. Raising crops and several types of livestock, they struggle mightily against a foe their agricultural predecessors never anticipated; global climate change.
Depicting large as well as small operations, the film shows what farmers are up against, and how determined many are to adopt environmentally responsible strategies, despite the seductive conveniences of modern agricultural practices. Through one setback after another, the film’s subjects display tenacity, endurance, humour and a sustaining dedication to family and community.
From Seed to Seed exemplifies the best qualities of those who farm, and provides a hopeful look at a modern movement that will prove vital in turning the tide of environmental destruction.

Katharina Stieffenhofer is a Winnipeg documentary filmmaker, with a passion for ecological agriculture, healthy communities and social justice.
Her love of Nature and appreciation of farmers is rooted in her childhood & youth growing up on a mixed family farm on a Rhine island in Germany and expanded when her parents immigrated to Canada to become grain farmers in Southern Manitoba.
Katharina obtained a Fine Arts Degree from the University of Manitoba (1996) and exhibited nationally and internationally during her 16-year visual art practice.
In 2001 she began working in the Manitoba film industry and has worked on ~ 45 films in various capacities in the art department, most notably as Art Director on Guy Maddin’s “My Winnipeg”.
“…And This Is My Garden”, 2010, was her first documentary film about a school gardening project in Northern Manitoba, which empowered the students with the skills to grow their own food sustainably in their own backyards.
The film has screened widely and won the following awards:
Most Inspirational Film Award, EcoFocus Film Festival, Athens, Georgia, USA
Audience Award – Inspiring Lives, Princeton Environmental Film Festival, Princeton, NJ, USA
Honourable Mention – 2011 Bayou City Inspirational Film Festival, Houston, TX, USA
“From Seed to Seed”, 2018, her feature-length documentary about the growing momentum of ecological agriculture, follows a group of small and large scale farmers for a season of blending age old traditions with cutting edge science.
Through my films I hope to engage, raise awareness and inspire positive change.
