THE HOLY FISH

‌At the verge of death, dying Parshuram recovers only to give him another chance of a meaningful death. The moksha is the highest goal of a human being according to Hindu mythology and Parshuram wishes to attain it. Retired primary teacher Parshuram then goes on a mission to find a mystical fish, depicted in religious folklores that could take him to the moksha. On the land of ‘maha kumbha’, one of the biggest gatherings in the worlds, he starts his search to find this fish to fulfill his biggest desire of attaining moksha. On the occasion of most sacred bathing day 'Mauni Amavasya', He encounters different faces of belief and religious business and then he reaches Daya panda (priest) who agrees to do the so called rituals to find the fish. Daya panda was very honest and a man with principals just before Parshuram approaches him but his deteriorating financial circumstances and his friend Jeetu boatman motivates him to walk on the path of lie and exaggeration. The duo convinces Parshuram to follow a fake mystical ritual where they say him only a man with pure soul can find that Holy Fish. Dedicated Parshuram leaves himself completely in the hands of Daya panda. After a series of bizarre rituals, not only Parshuram but even Daya encounters a reality he never thought about.

Director Statement

We wanted to tell a story of Indian beliefs and sayings. How an anecdote travels through centuries and people easily tell and hears those in bulks through the tradition of hearing the 'katha' in group. What happens when a firm believer of such anecdotes goes out to search for a mystical fish to attain the highest goal according to Hindu mythology the 'moksha'. We have pointed two interconnected stories that are complementary to each other. An old man looking for a fish depicted in folklores, goes to one of the biggest religious gathering of the world, the land of 'kumbh mela'. On the other hand, a newly married bride, facing the pain of being away from her husband, wants to go to the same with another purpose that is purely materialistic. This is the story of desires, guilts and beliefs and disbeliefs and we chose the real location of 'kumbh land' Allahabad because we wanted the maximum authenticity for our debut film. We shot the film in guerrilla style and the experience is lifetime and priceless.
