Schein

'Schein' is an experimental short dance film that speaks of the social expectations of how women are supposed to present themselves and of how following these rules can make them vulnerable to objectification and discrimination in our male dominated society.
Many girls grow up being taught to be sweet, to look pretty and “to shine”. Most boys are being rewarded for being smart, dominant and strong.
Women are expected to present themselves in a way that conforms to certain gender role expectations. They are much more harshly scrutinized for their appearance than their male counterparts and the objectification of women makes them vulnerable to discrimination and aggression in our male dominated society.
It is a continued struggle for women to discover their strength and to break free from the stereotypes they’ve been subjected to, which have prevented them to live fearlessly, by the same rules and with the same access to opportunity as men.
The German word “Schein” means “shine”, “glow” or “light”, as well as “make- believe”, “pretense” or “illusion”.
