Experiencing Interruptions?

Off for the Weekend

Bridget Goodwin wants to prove she is a mature and reliable young woman to the world and more importantly – to her mother. Although they have a close relationship, Bridget feels the need to demonstrate that she has everything under control. After promising to check in once she is settled, Bridget leaves her mom in the suburbs for a long weekend to pet-sit for a young couple in a small town. Little does Bridget know that her time away will be filled with many complications, including the challenge of trying to contact her mother.

Director Statement

Off for the Weekend is a film about the important bond between a mother and daughter as well as the dangers of our 21st century infatuation with technology. As a society we have become dependent on our electronic devices to do everything for us and to provide an ease of comfort. Unfortunately our preoccupation for instantaneous connectivity can take away from enjoying the company of family and friends as well as distract us from our general awareness of the world directly around us.

In the film our protagonist Bridget is kind and determined, but her fixation with her cell phone and looking for service to text hinders her ability to scope out other alternatives for reaching her mom. It’s not until the house phone rings that Bridget is reminded of other ways to communicate. In one scene she even passes right by the kitchen wall phone in her state of panic.

Producing this short film was inspired by a series of events and stories told to the director about housesitting and pet sitting along with her past experiences in babysitting when she was younger. In addition the director wanted to explore the intricate relationship that a mother and a millennial daughter can have as the daughter grows into a young adult.
