Hierve El Agua (The Water Boils)
Experimental documentary short filmed in Mexico. Water that sounds as if it’s boiling, but it is not: it is only the sound. From mysterious pans of still photos taken from a tourist point of view, to the camera suddenly bumping along a back-road hitched ride in the back of a pick-up truck up a mountain to a remote mineral spring in the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico. Trying to communicate across borders of language and social rules. A beautiful stranger, repressed desire that bubbles out of the spring. Borders of space, language, and culture: travel/ tourism. English/Spanish. Still photography/moving image. Life (water) /death (coffins, vulture)? Sound/image. Body language/spoken language? Distance/desire for the filmed? The barriers of language inundated with a quiet hidden desire. Music by the experimental sound band Matmos, used with permission.
