Director Statement

When I had the idea for "Blue Crystel" I was studying ancient myths. I love sci-fiction, so I thought it would be very interesting to make a movie in which a primitive culture is mixed to a technologically advanced one. Past and future at the same time. I would tell the story following the classic Greek tragedies' models, but also of many fairy tales. So I tried to write a story of a primitive world set in a far future with limited high-technology and magic elements. In fantasy stories it's very predominant the battle between good and evil, the main characters fight to restore the balance in their world. The world of "Blue Crystel" need to restore balance not only between good and evil, but also between men and women. It's impossible to live in a world populated only by men, or only by women. The Blue Crystal, key element for the plot, is only a crystal of energy, it's not good or evil, but it's owned and used by human beings who can choose to use it for good or evil. I shot the movie between September and October 2016, entirely in the towns of Montella and Rocca San Felice, near Avellino, in Italy. It was shot in two weeks but it took me about two years to complete it, having worked personally on more than 250 digital visual effects shots. I tried to achieve a look both modern and vintage, I said to my cinematographer I wanted colors like a 70s sci-fi movie and it should have imperfections to be more believable, so in post-production we adjusted colors to make it more like as if it had been filmed on film. For the score I wanted at the same time tribal and electronic sounds, and voices for the supernatural properties of the Crystal. So in every aspect of the making of this movie I had the challenge to mix up very different styles and genres.
