E18 Error. Interlude

E18 ERROR. INTERLUDE (2017)
Bronze chess set 8 x 40 x 40 cm,
pigment print on aluminium 50 x 75 cm,
a series of 7 photos

E18 was an error of digital Canon cameras, which distorts our conventional image of reality. This creates the need for an interlude, an intermezzo, which would fill the void created by a technical error. Instead of chess pieces, I use bronze pieces made of chewed nail polish bottles. Each individual bottle was casted from my personal used black nail polish collection, 32 in total. At first, they seem to be identical bronze bottles, but upon closer observation, they appear to be different, revealing nail scratches and tooth marks on the surface of the cap – markers of psychological strain. I attempt to approach chess with personal compulsiveness as a dignified system with set rules that I remember having known as a child, while by now, I have almost forgotten its moves. The pop art like photographic enlargement of personally used bottles of black nail polish, collected over the years, is a technique I have used before. I will reintroduce it here as an expression of a personal neurotic dimension, an image of deadlock that takes over the game rules, so that it has so many options it cannot even begin.

Artist Statement

I find a contemporary work of art to be a so-called (user) interface between the creator, context of creation and the audience. My activity as an artist is based on mutual creative cooperation and adventures with people that I have chosen. As a photographer, I have also been intrigued by the autobiographical details of everyday life.
I have experimented with the analysis of femininity from the neo-pop viewpoint; street-level action; performances at rock concerts; a video production on the topics of mental health based on a literary work; an anthropological study of a profession; including amateurs, etc.
In my works and studies on MA level at the Estonian Academy of Arts, I plan to continue studying the social demonization of mental health issues, not only approaching the topic on symbolic level, but also involving people who have faced it themselves.
