Director Biography - Rick Gutierrez

Weaned on wildly inappropriate films as a child, Rick Gutierrez migrated towards stories that plumbed the darker side of life from an early age. Determining as a teenager that being a film director was what he wanted to do with his life, Gutierrez has defied pigeonholing, ping-ponging between an adaptation of the French existential landmark "No Exit," a film heavily influenced by "American Psycho" in "Affection," a relationship drama in "Somewhat Damaged," and the mockumentary "Method."

With his latest effort, the thriller "Stay," Gutierrez reteams with Darren Buser (screenwriter on "Method"). A fan of Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan's work, Gutierrez leapt at the opportunity to work on a project with a non-linear narrative.

Past being prologue, Gutierrez is currently readying an apocalyptic comedy for production in early 2018, developing a feature-length horror that draws equal inspiration from "The Howling" and "Children of Men," and outlining a drama that was inspired by the assassination attempt on Gabrielle Giffords.

Director Statement

With "Stay," I was eager to show the pitfalls people can find themselves in when they're so eager to fall in love that they throw caution and sense to the wind, ignoring the longview for what's immediately in front of them.
