Director Statement

Mile High Nancy started when I decided to try stand up comedy in Denver, Colorado. As a single mother by choice, it was difficult to find the time to go to open mic nights and showcases but the drive to perform was intense. I thought I had multiple sclerosis and realized if you want to live your dream, you need to do it while you have the ability.

I enjoyed being on stage and making people laugh, but I felt a lot of my comedy would be better expressed in sketch form so I created a web series. The other aspect of the show is cooking with and using cannabis. There is a stigma against moms who use cannabis - people stereotype marijuana users as unable to be good parents. I felt I had a great opportunity to show that marijuana users lead productive lives and can use cannabis responsibly.

I hope women, especially women over 40, can relate to the main characters. I think there is a dearth of understanding in films of what mature women go through emotionally and sexually.

On the one hand, Nancy struggles with how to please others such as her mom, but she can also be selfish. I want the audience to experience a multi-faceted character, not just a one dimensional image.

I try to be light hearted and have a good time and I think it's important that sentiment comes across. The show is also about Nancy being silly with her friends. Grown women need to be goofballs once in a while with each other.

The camera work is mostly hand-held and some cinema verite so the viewers feel they are part of the action in an authentic way. I enjoy incorporating natural actions and dialogue. I also enjoy fantasy type scenes, such as the martial arts scene with Nancy's mother.

Mile High Nancy begs the question can a single mom balance traditional parenting with non-traditional vocations such as cannabis cooking and stand up comedy. It also makes us wonder is it ever too late to pursue your dreams.
