fisher/woman
Belgian fisherwomen have for centuries lived in the shadow of fishermen; but in the 1950s, a Flemish woman named Liliane dared to dream of a career at sea – and was willing to go to great lengths to achieve it. In Ostend, a former fisherman, now painter, recalls Liliane’s unusual journey, while a modern-day fisherwoman shares a story of her own. Did Liliane manage to shatter the glass ceiling, or are fisherwomen still on the outskirts of the Belgian fishing industry?
