For 36 years, through his affiliation with his father & uncle (both career coaches for Dayton Public Schools), Coach Powell affectionally known as Coach Al J, has been involved in sports, creating football highlight films since the tender age of six. He would sit for hours watching and assisting his father as a child. As did his father & uncle he served as Dunbar football team ball boy through his childhood as did his cousins Albert Eugene & Darran Powell. As a young child, Al J developed his love and enthusiasm for coaching football especially Dunbar football teams; the only football team in the world that can rival his love for Dunbar is his beloved Cleveland Browns. Coach Al J has always helped to tackle the most critical issues facing his student athletes & their families. He’s contributed to resolving issues concerning homelessness, hunger, unemployment & underemployment, transportation issues, juvenile court, probation & drug court related matters. His groundbreaking documentary “We Believe in Us” is a daring insight into the life of inner city youth and the men who attempt to mold, hold and when necessary scold them. His advocacy and innovation have empowered coaches, parents, and educators to understand and assist troubled youth in turning their struggles into triumph!
