CARMEN is the ultimate femme fatal, an identity from which she can not escape. Her exceptional beauty and status as an outsider brings about a fate that is karmic. CARMEN, is transformed through the graceful classical Indian dance Mohiniyattam, otherwise known as the dance of the enchantress.

Director Biography - Sara Baur-Harding, urs baur

Sara is a painter in Topanga California She is also founder of the Topanga Film Festival and Institute. She has made one feature Documentary film, BEYOND GRACE and numerous short films including CARMEN. Sara collaborates with her husband Urs Baur and her cohort Vijaylakshmi with whom she also works on stage productions.

Director Statement

An artist, filmmaker, and co-founder of the Topanga Film Festival & Institute Sara is interested in multicultural narratives and multi dimensional modes of expression. This her first feature documentary started with the unprecedented conversation with Vijayalakshmi and her mother and guru Bharati Shivaji. And which provides the framework for a portrait of mother and daughter in a definitive story of two uniquely relevant classical Indian dancers and the unusual dance form, Mohiniyattam. Subsequently, Vijayalakshmi and Ms Baur Harding have worked together on multiple creative projects and currently are in post-production on their latest collaboration, a short film inspired by the Bizet’s classical opera.
