Directors Note.
On reading the story, I was captivated by this girl who is so determined, quietly and unostentatiously, to continue her education in the face of extreme odds.
She is very talented at mathematics, but her talent is in danger of being buried forever due to poverty, migration, days filled with hard toil and a father hostile towards her aspirations.
More concerned with trying to eke out a lining for his family, the father simply doesn’t grasp the importance of education in the life of his daughter.
It was clear at the outset that the film should be understated. Excessive drama in story telling as well as in the performances was to be avoided. Real locations (village, sugarcane fields, and factory) were essential in order to make the images feel authentic. Another challenge was to work with child actors and to guide them to achieve a certain depth in their performances without restoring to loud and needless drama.
One hopes that one has succeeded to some extent at least.
