1st of July
1st of July is a short film that explores how a brother and a sister experience comparative safety and freedom in Iraq and Australia. While the sister has adapted to Australian culture and has multiple cultural identities, her brother does not understand because of living with only one culture. He feels disconnected from her - his everyday life is like a repeated episode. She urges him to open up his world, he urges her to return to tradition. This cultural disconnection is represented through animated inverse, high contrast photographs of the two contrasting environments. The characters are played by my own parents. The script was inspired by their experience of migration.
