Thia Schuessler and Rex New wrote and directed the short film HOUSESITTER, which played at the Indianapolis and Atlanta Film Festivals, amongst others. Schuessler & New were nominated for the Atlanta Film Festival's "Filmmaker to Watch" award. The film was also selected for the Film Festival Collective by Xfinity On Demand. Most recently, New and Schuessler produced the second season of LES CARDINAUX, a French short film anthology, which premiered at the 2017 Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival.
With Nick Turner, New received a Writers Guild Award nomination for co-writing the film DANCE CAMP, produced by Jon M. Chu. The movie was YouTube Red's first original film. Most recently, the two adapted the novel THE SECRET WISDOM OF THE EARTH, produced by Alicia Van Covering and Amy Stein.
From directors Rex New & Thia Schuessler, co-founders of Shy Ruby Productions:
Last spring, we attended our friends' wedding in New Orleans. We had always discussed shooting something there, and it was during that trip that we began to conceive THE WEDDING SONG.
We envisioned a plot that would revolve around the musical talents of another friend, New Orleans singer/songwriter Will Dickerson. With the help of Dickerson and Shy Ruby composer Ben Stanton, we created a music-themed film that we hope captures the uncertainty of our 20s amidst the beauty of New Orleans.
***A brief technical note -- we are submitting a version of the film that is just under 14 minutes, in order to highlight Ben Stanton's score over the closing credits. We have another version that is EXACTLY 13 MINUTES with a shorter credits sequence.
