Director Statement

Murder is not just physical in nature. By literal definition, “murder” is a physical act that takes away one’s life. But to me, “murder” also means to kill someone by harming one psychologically. In Longing, Anthony (the father) “murdered” his son, John, by neglecting him, and the way he favored his illegitimate child, Karl.

Longing is a very personal work, and it is based on my father and I. Since discovering the existence of my half sister, I have been tackling my emotional problems, yet my father constantly forced me to accept my half sister. Through this piece, I hope to obtain the apology and understanding that I could never have in reality.

The word “longing” expresses John’s hope for the return of the loving and understanding Anthony, as well as Anthony anticipation of John’s acceptance towards Karl.
