Rogelio Martell - Avenue 33 - Director Statement
Living in an old Victorian house in Montecito Heights in Los Angeles was an opportunity to make a dark short film about two dark angels who have been living in this house for more than 100 years and every time that somebody rents a room they will make them disappear. The house is the focal point of the film with its unusual garden, rustic setting and architecture, it was perfect for a supernatural or paranormal script. Plus, the antique furniture and lighting add value to the production. I was inspired for this film from the David Lynch movies. The style is kind of surreal, where there are two realities or parallel dimensions existing in this house. The editing is with quick cuts to built tension and long takes to encourage introspection. The soundtrack is eerie and mysterious with the intent to build some kind of discomfort from the viewer.
I hope the film will create an emotional experience for the viewers and show that with minimal resourses you can make a film. When I started this journey, little by little the film started taking shape and the pool of actors and crew in Los Angles is incredible. You only need an idea, imagination, and passion for filmmaking to start doing your films. This short film will expose the dark side of this peaceful old house in this quiet neighborhood.
