“Clay”, Otto Dix’s music video from the album “Animus” (2015), has a complicated history. The shooting process lasted nearly a year as it kept on encountering almost mystic impediments. This relates the video to film adaptations of “The Master and Margarita” and probably has to do with the profound mysticism of the visual work.
Michael Draw, the scriptwriter and director of the music video, addressed the subject of religion and reinterpreted the creation myth which is almost identical in the most different cultures. From the Akkadian Empire and Sumer to Abrahamic religions, from the Egyptian pantheon to Far Eastern deities – everywhere a more or less similar story is to be seen.
The teamwork of Michael Draw and the film crew, as well as professional exotic style dancers, has presented the story in a manner resembling that of the Middle East.
The overall atmosphere and style of the music video rather remind of metal bands, such as, for instance, Behemoth, Cradle of Filth or Dimmu Borgir with the only difference, that the work of Otto Dix is rather cinematic (according to fans, it feels like you are watching a movie trailer) and includes very few scenes with members of the band.
Revealing, scrupulously decorated costumes, fire show, plenty of slow-mo shots, blood-red shades – some scenes literally give the viewer goosebumps. The scene, viscid, like antique red wine, captivates and reminds that we all originate from “red mud”.
