Barba Rija / Rough Beard

Rough Beard (Barba Rija) follows the lives of three gay friends who are bears. António, Pedro and Ursão (Big Bear) live in Lisbon. They work, go out at night and get in romantic adventures. Pedro ended up with his boyfriend and is the group´s lovebird. António is the most rational of the three and has a secret passion. Already Big Bear is the strongest, but also the sweetest, who will be surprised with a change in life. The three are the symbol of fellowship, of various types of masculinity, affections, concerns and expectations that belong to all human beings. André Murraças, the author, writes fot theatre and tv and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy.

Director Biography - André Murraças

Born in 1976, took his degree in Scenography at the High School of Theatre and Film Lisbon and a Master of Arts in Scenography with distinction at Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Utrecht, Holland. He also attended workshops with Simon Stephens, Jorge Silva Melo, David Harrower, William Forsythe, Thomas Lehmen, Jan Ritsema and Rebecca Schneider.

He directed and wrote Barba Rija (Rough Beard). Writer, performer and director of theatre shows like Teatro Noir, Sex Zombie - the life of Veronica Lake, A Walk, Hollywood, More of a Man, One Night Only, An Ideal Husband, Louis Lingg, Pour Homme, Swingers, Love Pieces and Words are my Business.

He was also responsible for the original texts and direction of The Birds, Cândida - a portuguese story, Three Lonely Men, Every night the same night , Film Noir, CinemaScope and The Fat Narcissus Mirror. In the cinema he was directed by João Pedro Rodrigues.

Selected to represent Portugal at the Sala Beckett, Barcelona, with Simon Stephens.
Received three times the prize "Theatre of the Decade" by CPAI and represented Portugal in the Biennale of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean. The Magazine MINI International called him one of the most promising authors of his generation.
