My journey into filmmaking began in early secondary school, I found myself going out with my friends each weekend with a phone and later a camcorder to film a random story we'd made up on the day about characters we'd designed.
For me being a part of this was highly enjoyable, it was at this point I was going into my GCSE's and decided I wanted to go into the world of filmmaking and pursue a creative career.
After school I studied at Northbrook College and did a BTEC Creative Media Production diploma. Attending a college catered for creatives was inspiring as I learned a great deal about the many aspects of filmmaking and the realities of working within that industry. My time at college helped prepare me for my next venture, university.
Using the skills and lessons I had learnt in college I knew I wanted to further them at a higher level. My time at university of Chichester helped my forge my path further as an aspiring director. My first proper short film I directed while studying at university was The Vagabond (2016) and then for my final dissertation film I directed Red River (2017).
The experience of directing these two short films as well as assisting on other short films has helped me create relationships with other aspiring filmmakers and actors which have become very beneficial as I have now graduated out of education and into the wide world, ready to forge my path further in the creative industry.
When we came together to make Red River we wanted to make something far greater in scope and quality that had not been seen in any other dissertation films made prior to us.
From a directorial perspective I wanted to make sure the characters were portrayed correctly, we were tackling characters that although were fictional, many people endured similar events in reality to what is portrayed within the film.
At the same time I wanted to do something different with this style of drama, I wanted the film to be able to pose questions about choice and morality, in my eyes there are no truly good or evil characters within the film.
Some characters have done terrible acts, but like all of us we justify our actions for various reasons, it is a key factor to being human, this idea is reflected in the film, I would say that these questions and ideas propelled our vision forward when making this short film.
I thoroughly enjoyed working with all three of our actors, their passion and commitment to their roles inspired me and the crew. I would work with them discussing their characters, motivations and backstories. They kept high spirits just like the crew did even through tough weather, long shooting days and location logistics. It was a true pleasure collaborating with everyone who was involved making this film reality.
Red River is something I and my fellow filmmakers wanted to show to the world that if you have the drive, resources and passion for filmmaking no matter what your situation or starting point, anything is achievable.
