'the beautiful': The Stories She Tell
As she removed the fabric from her head her identity was altered provoking questions of identity and culture. Throughout time women’s identities have been examined, as a whole, and within individual cultures. Hair is an identifier of ethnicity and a DNA trait that has evolved over time. The ‘natural look’ was once seen negatively but has developed to signify ‘empowerment’ and ‘pride’. By unraveling the scarf, the woman reveals her hair as the internal thoughts about black self-image are projected through spoken word.
