Director Biography - Sean Brown

Sean Brown is a Portland based film maker. He lived in Seoul, London, Mexico City, New York and Los Angeles before moving to Portland in 1997. His two biggest influences in no budget film making are the twisted and personal story telling of Andy Milligan and the comedy of John Waters. Kakoon, set in Portland’s Shanghai tunnels, is his first feature length film and is an homage to the style and family dysfunction of Milligan’s masterpiece “Seeds of Sin”. Kakoon is also the first of three Portland-centric feature films. His second feature, a lucha libre comedy, comments on the gentrification of NE Portland and premiered in August 2014. His third, a dark family drama, goes into production Spring 2015. Sean has been married for 23 years and has a daughter and a grand daughter. He now has health insurance.

Director Statement

KAKOON is the first installment in a trilogy of no-budget full length films featuring Portland, Oregon USA as their location. Each film was made for under $500 USD on a used Sony mini DV purchased for $50 USD. My purpose is to exemplify the possibility of entertaining and engaging movie making outside the corporate structure. Accessible to almost anyone, the resources are readily available to create and distribute our own stories.

KAKOON is in the style of 60's exploitation director Andy Milligan's "Seeds of SIn". It is a stilted reworking of the mumblecore genre infused with dynamic editing and jarring camera. The psycho sexual fetishizing of sacrifice and rebirth symbolize a narcissistic need present in each of the character's relationships.
