Director Statement

As I walked around the set of this visually stunning photo shoot by Chicago photographer Falyn Huang, my big DSLR and I were confronted with a stark reality. The entire time, cast, crew, and everyone else were recording bits and pieces on their phones and instantly uploading to their Instagram feeds with the marker #BTS. Many images appeared as an 'InstaStory' feature, dissapearing forever within a day.
I kept thinking about what I was doing there--besides the fact that I was asked by the artist. Most people would have seen all they've wanted to see by the time I would finish an edit several weeks later. What is the purpose of a DSLR and editing software when everything can be done on a phone?
In crafting this is little video essay, I wanted to explore media abundance, instant gratification through Instagram, and the phone as a new media tool vs traditional but not yet obsolete resources such as a formal camera and NLEs.
