Nia Hill
Some set out to create their own path; others simply know their calling and carry out each task in
light of this calling. Nia Hill is the perfect prototype of the latter. It's rare to find a triple threat
who has been blessed with gifts to write, produce and direct with equal skill and passion. A force
to be reckoned with ever since the beginnings of her undergraduate career at The University of
Oklahoma, to her current venture with Outer Child, and all that has developed in between. Hill
has set out to spread knowledge and light in all realms of media.
After acquiring a dual degree in Communications and Spanish at her alma mater, Hill set out to
influence the world through various media projects in film, television, theatre, and music; giving
leverage to her passion as a writer, producer, composer and entrepreneur. Nia Hill has since
established a career building successful entertainment companies as well as creating and
marketing exclusive brands. With roots in theatre and promotion, she has managed to flourish as
an entertainment entrepreneur.
Hill’s intention to spread a message of hope, healing, and awareness to people and causes often
overlooked has been the most fulfilling part of her trek.
Ms. Hill’s first company – The Solstice Group – although her first go at cultivating and
nourishing an independent business for the arts, quickly became one of the leading concert and
theatre promotion and booking agencies in the Southeast United States.
Soon after, her involvement as co- creator and founder of Strange Fruit Media, a film and
television production company, earned her several distinguished credits for critically acclaimed
television series’ such as Sunday Best, The Family Crews, One Night Only, Exalted! and Family
Reunion. Through Strange Fruit Media, Hill was successful in offering a fresh perspective to film
and television with her business partner D’Angela Proctor, and has offered fourteen years of
great content as one of the most prominent African-American owned female production
company to date.
Her next endeavor, The Momentum Experience, was birthed from the need to control and
distribute the images that reflect often under represented races and cultures. It was designed to
offer an alternative to traditional theatrical studio distribution by showing films in nontraditional
venues. By mixing live theatre performance with commercial films, this model quickly became a
revolutionary distribution and marketing company for both first–run films and cultural classics.
The Momentum Experience model was publicly supported by visionaries Will Smith, Tisha
Campbell-Martin, Duane Martin, and Blair Underwood. The company’s first release was the
Strange Fruit produced romantic comedy, The Seat Filler starring Destiny Child’s Kelly Rowland
and Duane Martin. It’s per screen average broke records through this innovative releasing model.
Hill has since been involved in a considerable amount of productions which lay close to her
heart, including a docu-reality series, One Night Only produced in conjunction with
Dreamworks, and incorporated the lives of post Katrina high school students attempting to
mount their own version of the original Tony award winning musical, with the clips from the film
and appearance and support from the All-Star cast of “Dreamgirls” the movie.
Within the last year Hill, has received an NAACP Image award for Executive Producing the
highly acclaimed music competition series, Sunday Best, and is currently nominated for a
Grammy for writing the hit song “Jesus” sung by Sunday Best’s contestant LeAndria Johnson.
She also, has completed the Libretto for an Opera called: Nina Simome presents “Cest Tout
Absourde” A Coloured Ballet, which she was engaged to write by the daughter of Ms. Simone
herself.
Ms. Hill has recently collaborated with five African American mothers to create a touching docu-
feature, in which she is directing, about how these women struggle to raise their autistic children
in a world where their white counter parts are diagnosed up to two and a half years before them.
This docu-feature, entitled “Colored My Mind,” has already been screened at the White House
and presented to congress to make an effective legislative change for this demographic of autistic
children. Weeks later, Nia and her colleagues received an official letter from Congress stating that
the bill had been signed by President Obama and passed into law.
Hill is also currently producing several projects with Academy Award winning producer Ed
Saxon, including My Soul to Keep, the award-winning novel by Tananarive Due with Fox
Searchlight. Also upcoming are several inspirational bio-pics about famed African-American
architect Paul Williams as well as a film on the life of Noble Peace Prize Laureate, Norman
Borlaug.
Nia Hill continues to use her innovative spirit to reach out to underserved communities and
spread those same ideas of hope and integrity that catapulted her career. Her avant-garde
approach to stimulate her audience’s senses and create an urge to make a change in the world is
especially present in her most recent business venture, Outer Child. Outer Child’s mission is to
continue to produce a high caliber of inspiring works, promoting hope, integrity and love for our
present and future. It promotes the release of any one artist’s confined spirit, to set their creative
selves free, so that we all may inspire the world.
Nia Hill is truly one of today’s most devoted visionaries, and has vowed to preserve, stimulate and
empower the world using the sharp global sword of creativity to navigate new territories in the
world of Global Media.
As a storyteller in multiple mediums, my goal is always to get still, and quiet enough to hear the character's and their stories come through me in a way that is authentic to their individual and collective journeys.
