Director Statement

Growing up biracial during the '80s and '90s, I was often confronted by the word "other." It was a time before there was an option to choose two or more, a time when race was still trying to conform to a neat and tidy little box. But with time, things changed and the boxes spread. The other seemed to fade away, until now.

Recently, as I was filling out a job application, I went to select gender and found male, female, and other. There it was again - the other. That one little word still had the power to shake me. It affected me on a primal level, bringing back all of those feelings of separation, of not belonging, and my heart went out to those who were now challenged by it.

"The Importance of Finding the Other" is a journey to discover humanity. It seeks to let go of the boxes and classifications that divide us and instead embrace the human core that unites us.

We are all others.
