Concerning Long Lost Love,

Jessy Holtermann (writer and producer) brought me a draft of Long Lost Love while developing a female-centric project that would showcase her range as an actor. Initially I was hesitant to take on a dramatic short, but soon we talked over the possibilities in creating a world of romantic surrealism. I began to see the directions we could take the story and the fun we could have with the lighting and atmosphere, and I realized Jessy’s concept was both tragic and absurd- an ideal combo for a short.
I shot the film in a small California Craftsman in Historic Filipinotown, Los Angeles, and utilized the interior’s vibrant color schemes coupled with an abundance of natural light (and an excellent DP) to capture a house that was lived-in, bright, and nostalgic at the same time. We then blocked our action around the intimacy of the home to accent the compartments of the story, using the home like an antagonist in our tracking shots and a countermeasure of June’s to break Sam’s approach. The splicing of close-ups and diversions, room changes and panic help turn the stage-play premise into a fluid drama with driving action and sustained investment and momentum. I am very proud of the result.
I must especially thank Jessy for creating such a fun, romantic premise, as well as our awesome cast and crew for bringing it to the big screen with their time, energy, and passion. Thank you!

Sincerely,
Devin P Murphy
