Maya Dixon, a 26-year-old native of Columbus, Ohio, graduated from the prestigious Spelman College in 2013 and now attends American University as a part of the MFA Film and Media Arts program. A lifelong lover of the arts, Dixon reads many novels in her spare time, contributing to her process as a creator of original, meaningful media. She has been selected to participate in the highly-regarded FAMU study abroad program in Prague, where she hopes to challenge her abilities and grow as an artist and filmmaker.
I have always been intrigued by all forms of the arts. Film has also been a medium that I admire because you can combine all aspects of the arts within it. Ever since I was a child I loved stories. I enjoyed reading them, seeing them and fabricated stories as needed. Within each production I try to tell a new story. I try to give voice to a different community, person or ethnic group. As a part of the millennial generation my existence as a filmmaker is completely unchartered. There are no rules or right way to create. This makes my journey more difficult but in a way it allows me more freedom. It is my hope to inspire others to fulfill their dreams and create magic through the fine arts.
