Director Biography - Eric M. Mwangi

Eric is a 24 year old filmmaker who's currently on his final year as a student of film at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya. His passion for storytelling started at a young age, when he would watch movies and desire to be in those movies. Later, he discovered that there's an entire world behind filmmaking and the desire grew from wanting to be in the movies, to wanting to make them. He ventured into filmmaking by starting off as a writer & cinematographer. In time, he discovered that he has a unique ability in storytelling and decided to try his hand in Directing. Since then, it's been an upward journey.

Eric just completed his first ever feature film titled "The Runaway" as part of his coursework with a strained budget and has gone ahead to prove that the passion, fire, skill and thrill of storytelling transcends strained resources. He has a unique ability in using little to gain much, while still maintaining the integrity of the story. He has received multiple accolades within and outside Kenya. His most notable achievements include:
• Best Director for the documentary film “Shattered Flower” during the 34th Kenya National Drama Festival – Film Category (2015) – In Kenya
• Best Director for the short film “Sunday” during the 2nd Annual 48 Hour Film Festival held at University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio (2015) – In the United States of America

Eric would like to venture more into feature films, telling African stories for Africa and the globe. He is currently working on a series of short films tackling subjects such as Female Genital Mutilation, HIV/AIDS and true stories from the African culture, traditions and way of life.
Eric seeks to further his studies and be a Master of Fine art in filmmaking in order to broaden his scope and understanding of the filmmaking world.

Director Statement

I believe, in the words of G. K. Chesterton, that - "Life is a story and if there’s a story, there’s a storyteller." The Runaway is part of my greater journey in storytelling. And while injustice seems to be an everyday thing in our society, may we be quickened, as storytellers to highlight these issues for a better society. This film has opened my heart and eyes to greater possibilities for the African people especially in my journey to narrow the definition of what African Cinema is or what it entails. Thank you for watching.
