David Masters is an award winning commercial and short film director based in the U.K. and the U.S.
Blown Away is very much a DIY project born out of failure. It began life as a commercial treatment but didn't get selected. I loved the idea too much to let it go so I turned my small garage into an effects studio with water tanks and lights on ropes and burning bits of steel wool etc. to create the sub atomic and cosmic elements. This was all captured on my small domestic sony camera.
I was introduced to Dion Pratt by Francesca Penzani (a dancer, choreographer and film maker) having seen him perform at a Calarts end of term show. I showed Dion the initial cosmic/sub atomic elements I'd been working on and explained my interpretation of them. Dion then set about creating this amazing performance that for me really captures the beautiful tension between chaos and control. I approached Deru and asked if we could use his music as it had become such an essential and perfect part of the creative process and he graciously agreed. This is Blown Away.
