Yusron Fuadi an energetic film maker. He had a tremendous enthusiasm in film making and already made Documentaries, couple Fiction and obsessed in visual effect. Work as lecturer in Diploma Program, Gadjah Mada University. His first Feature long movie called Tengkorak (Skull) have been nationally screened in Indonesian cinema on October 18th 2018. Now he is in the process of exploring his new ideas with a new movie.
Growing up as moviegoer and science fiction enthusiast, it’s always been came in my mind about how to make everything becomes possible in film making. In Indonesia, science fiction is quite popular, people do watch in cinema. But from Indonesian production point of view, unlike drama, comedy, romance or action, this particular genre is not widely explored or well produced. While the society assumed that science fiction is simply just about aliens, laser or robots, beside there are some best works of science fiction that promoted themes about humanity or human nature in the technologies advances.
Star Wars no longer about robots, aliens or outer space, but also about the life of a samurai. Blade Runner is not just about a cybernetics organism, but study about the humanity itself. District 9 not just about aliens, yet about separator system or racial discrimination. But sometimes, this point continuously failed to impress the judges to award them as a winner for the Best Picture category. Star Wars, Avatar, District 9, or even the newest film Gravity would never score over other genres even though they might be as good as others, science fiction will always be an “underdog”. That fact would never make the society deny about the influence of the popularity of those films in the generation nowadays. Most of the film activist that are not interesting to the genre film like science fiction make me believe that this may give me more space to explore about it. We are enjoying a lot of science fiction films at the cinema, but we did not try to make it yet. This country needs a film activist who would like to make a science fiction movie for more. As far as I know, I have no competitor in this matter.
Living in a developed country so far makes me realized if here we still have a lot of potential that can be expanded into a science fiction film that could be saying would never happen except in such developed countries only. That is why I choose District 9 as the film comparison. District 9 is a very unique film because you won’t find the typical chaos and so on in developed countries. Children of Men is a movie about the reaction of the society on issues which said that they might be the last generation on earth, one of greatest movies that make you feel the desperation of the character itself. Princess Mononoke is a movie with a perfect balances, the director has not made the character from the antagonist perspective. Every characters in it has no any choices if they want to continue living except with begin to think about common order. Man from Earth indicates that even without using a lot of visual, we can still explore an idea into a movie.
There is an action scene in this movie, I made it very up close and personal, which is considerately essential for developing the storyline of the movie itself. In this movie there is no longer about how to defeat the antagonist by the gorgeous and kind-hearted main character, but I need to make the audiences curious about what will happen to the characters in this movie when they watch it. This movie was made as the realization from one of the society comments about the new things. News on the television nowadays are often used as the main source of the truth of a story by the society, some even said that television is the last “religion” that discovered by the human beings.
Here are some movies that do not using antagonist characterizations, humanity and science. Humanity, religion and science will have the same portion in it. The Man from Earth proves that religion and science are cannot always be the answer to every question.
Not many movies could provide a war between religion and science without taking side to one of them. The premise of the film is designed to pass through such a phase of alignments. Religion and humanity, both side would equally be affected by this discovery and it proves that neither of them could always have answers to everything.
