日曜日式散步者 LE MOULIN

During the 1930's, Taiwan had already spent close to 40 years under Japanese rule, and had entered a stage of stable assimilation. This period saw the appearance of Taiwan's earliest modern poetry group—the“le Moulin” poetry society. The name le Moulin reflected the route taken by Western, and especially French, culture to Japan and then to Taiwan during the 20th century, and also displays the response of Asian writers and poets to the world after Western modernist entered Asia.

What impact did modernist literature and avant garde thinking have on the young poets of Taiwan? Is the acceptance of a foreign culture a pure exercise of the imagination, or is the emergence of a wholly-new hybrid species of life from one's own native soil? Living under colonial rule, what perspectives and questions to ponder did these poets leave for others through their poetic discourse and creation of poetry?
