10-42 is set in a near future world where people's "doubles" are randomly appearing. This is starting to cause a population crisis so the government has made it illegal to keep your double - if it appears you must give it up to the state.

The story follows a man who is indebted to a local crime boss who specializes in trafficking doubles. Our hero in the story impersonates police and whenever there is a 1042 code will try to snatch the double up before the police arrive.

Because of his debt to the crime boss, he has 24 hours to find 12 doubles. The story begins 1 hour before his time is up and he has 1 more go to.
