Director Statement

After studying the problem of the orphanhood I suddenly realized that if we don’t make someone’s life better, we just waste our time. The life is too short for spending it in vein. Each one of us could find something worth living for.

To adopt a child is not easy. If it was that simple, everybody would be willing to do this. Numerous public opinion polls show that the majority of people express positive attitude towards foster guardianship, but most of them are not ready to adopt a child.

It means that an inspiring example needs to be set. The idea of providing such an example made the foundation of the documentary “You are not alone”.

This relevant topic became a basis for many documentaries and movies. But often truthful but depressing style of story-telling makes the audience feels sympathies without prompting to the main action – adopting children.

One of the main goals of our documentary is to fully unfold the topic by using the different kind of film language. Unlike many documentaries about orphanhood, the life-asserting film “You are not alone” calls for a positive emotional feedback, it gives hope for a better and brighter future. My documentary is saturating with vivid colors associated with the happy childhood. Despite the documentary-chronicle shooting, we were aiming to create esthetics appropriate to the main concept. It was decided to organize expedition to the Republic of Adygea to underline the cohesion of the family members through the unity with nature.

The main conflict is interpreted in the contrasting terms: on the one hand – fearful memories of foster kids about the orphanage and their irresponsible biological parents, on the other hand – safe and successful life with the foster parents in the loving family.

Main characters of the documentary are two specific foster families: one is adopting deficient kids, another is taking in teenagers. These two categories of kids often suffer from the lack of attention, and they are least likely to get adopted. But our protagonists are not scared away by these difficulties. By sharing their experiences they show their foster kids are raised as strong and self-confident individuals.

The final episode of the documentary is the encouragement to adopt foster kids. The main heroine takes another kid out of the orphanage to join her family. While saying farewells to her toys, the little girl can’t part with her baby doll and she takes the doll with her to a new life.

The touching scene of the caring girl – future mother – represents the profound meaning of the film and causes powerful emotional response from the audience.

To paraphrase the famous verse by Robert Rozhdestvensky “Everything starts with love…”, we say: “Everything starts with family….” Because the family is not just a part of the state, it’s a mini state of its own.
