ACCESS:HORROR FILM FESTIVAL
…SO INCLUSIVE, IT’S SCARY!

Access:Horror is a disabled-led film festival, here to celebrate the history, impact and future of disability in horror, experimental, and genre cinema. We were recently rated as one of the top 5 Most Accessible Film Festivals, according to the Accessibility Scorecard Impact Report from FWD-Doc and Film Festival Alliance. We offer screening fees and/or valuable accessibility assets, as well as partnerships with venues across the country, and brands like Blerdy Massacre, the George A. Romero Foundation, FANGORIA, and SHUDDER.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Our definitions of both horror and disability are expansive. We seek films informed by lived experience of disability. *Please note that we do not require folks to disclose or depict those experiences on screen to be programmed. We believe that you should not have to perform your identity to be recognized.* In 2026, we plan to select ~25 films that stay with you. Experimental, narrative, documentary, hybrid, animation—we value impact over category. If your work embraces darkness and disability, we want to see it.

ACCESSIBILITY
We are committed to providing hybrid opportunities for our community. Our theatrical events utilize venues with wheelchair-accessible seating AND wheelchair-accessible bathrooms, in spaces that also welcome service animals. Screenings without food service require masking to allow our immuno-compromised community members to attend. Screenings both online and in theatres include open captioning, audio description options for all English-language films, and content warnings. Captioning is available for all Q&A’s and panels. Please reach out to request ASL interpretation or if you have other needs. Email us with questions at info@accesshorror.com.

SCREENINGS & VENUES
We partner with many festivals, including Lost Weekend Film Festival and Superfest Disability Film Festival, held bicoastally at The Alamo Drafthouse in Winchester, Virginia and The San Francisco Disability Cultural Center in San Francisco, CA —venues with deeply committed local audiences that bring strong communities together. In 2026, we anticipate adding at least two more venues to this list (final details will be provided no later than June). Additionally, films will screen on our DRM-enabled virtual platform. All filmmakers may choose to opt in or opt out of specific screening opportunities when final details are shared in June.

THE ACCESS:HORROR EXPERIENCE
From the beginning, Access:Horror has been about conversations that matter, centering genre storytelling, exploring accessibility practices in production, and scaring up authentic work that terrifies. Q&A’s, panels and live podcasts spark ideas and connections. Selected filmmakers will engage with professional access providers and creatives, programmers, and artists, finding new collaborators, and leaving with creative solutions for a broken filmmaking ecosystem, as well as live-able practices in filmmaking that center care and accessibility.

SUBMISSION DETAILS
Preferred screeners: Vimeo or YouTube (private links welcome)

Non-English films must be subtitled in English

SELECTION PROCESS
Every film is watched—at least three programmers view every submission. We pick films with strong disability representation (on screen or off), with a preference for intersectional stories and messaging that aligns with the principles of Disability Justice. We’re looking for work that stays with us. If selected, you’ll be notified by June 1st, 2026. If not, you’ll still hear from us. We may not be able to offer individual feedback, but we value every submission.

KEEP US POSTED
If anything changes—premiere status, online release, passwords—drop us a note.

FINAL WORD
We started this fest in 2023 out of a desire for dread that could be enjoyed (yes, enjoyed) in the comfort of a space that welcomes everyone. Three years on, we’re still growing and learning. Join us—and let’s make horror accessible together. ONE OF US! ONE OF US!

AWARDS

Access:Horror isn’t about competition, but we do recognize work that rises above. Beginning this year, a rotating jury of filmmakers, artists, and advocates selects award winners—categories will shift to fit the work. In addition to jury awards, we will also present Audience Awards. Each film submitted is automatically considered for all eligible awards. Additionally, films that screen in partnership with Lost Weekend are eligible for Lost Weekend’s awards for Best Film/Horror Film.

JURIED AWARDS
-Best Experimental Short
-Best Documentary Short
-Best Fictional Short
-Best Feature
-Best Screenplay
-Best Director
*Other Categories To Be Announced

AUDIENCE AWARDS
-Best Short
-Best Feature

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
-Films must be related to genre (horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and the fantastic) and incorporate disability in front of or behind the camera, but can be experimental, animation, music video, documentary, narrative, hybrid. We value work that fits our mission, whatever form it takes.
-Films that are advertisements commissioned by a commercial company or a promotional video for an organization (PSAs) are not eligible for submission.
-Non-English language works must include English subtitles or English captions.

-By submitting to Access:Horror, filmmakers are confirming that they own or have obtained all appropriate clearances for the screening rights of their films, and are granting permission to show their film at the festival and to portions of their film as promotional assets leading up to the festival.

LENGTH GUIDELINES
Feature: over 40 minutes

Short: 40 minutes or less

WAIVERS

Alumni: If you’ve screened with Access:Horror before, you’re family—email info@accesshorror.com with your last AHFF title for an alumni waiver/discount.

Financial hardship: Write us. We try to help—usually with a discount rather than a full waiver.

Sanctions/conflict regions: We consider case-by-case waivers for filmmakers facing significant barriers. Reach out.

SCREENERS

Vimeo links preferred (password-protected).
 YouTube private links are fine.
FilmFreeway’s player is acceptable, though Vimeo is more reliable for quality and playback.

PREMIERES & PARTNERSHIPS

We consider all submissions on merit. We love discovering new work, but don’t want a lack of premiere status to stop your work from reaching our audience. Additionally, we recognize that your premiere status with other festivals may prevent you or your film from participating in all events and/or future streaming opportunities with SHUDDER, Bloodstream, and others. If selected, we will work with you to make sure your work is shown only when and where you want it.

A NOTE ABOUT SCREENING FEES & ASSETS

Each film accepted as an Access:Horror official selection that complies with the eligibility requirements (quality open captions and/or quality audio description - our definitions of these are provided below. Full requirements listed under TECHNICAL SPECS) will receive screening fees of $75/short and $150/feature (USD). Any other assets that contribute to screenings’ accessibility are highly encouraged. If you need support in creating these assets before submission, please see our website or contact us for helpful resources.

*Captions: On-screen timed text that includes spoken dialogue and descriptions of non-visual cues, such as music, off-screen speakers, and sound descriptions.
*Open Captions (OC): Video that has the captions showing during the screening for anyone watching. Text is permanently visible, therefore viewers do not need to switch on or use additional devices to access them.
*Film Audio Description (AD): An additional audio track with narration of a film’s key visual elements by inserting visual descriptions into pauses in the film’s dialogue. An individual who is Blind or Low Vision listens to the AD tracks in-person via personal Assistive Listening Devices, or virtually as a secondary audio track or alternative film version.
*For additional terms and information, please visit FEAW.org.

PREPARING FOR DELIVERY
We have tight schedules for our accessibility asset providers, so to help you prepare and save time, we’ve provided necessary tech specs below. Please make note of additional requirements for captions and audio description - they are different depending on whether you are providing them or we are. We are committed to only showing work with Open Captions, and to providing Audio Description options where we can, both online and in theatrical settings. We do this at significant cost, but expect you to budget appropriately for these in your future work after coordinating with us and learning more about what this takes. Filmmaker education is an important component of our values as a festival.

Access: Horror is such a wonderful and important film festival and I was absolutely honored to be included in the 2025 program with my short film, Golden Hour. There are very few film festivals that put a spotlight on disabled filmmakers, and even fewer still that focus on disabled filmmakers creating in the horror genre. From beginning to end, my experience with Access: Horror was incredible, from the communication that was top notch, to the care that was put into all of the excellent programming. Plus, we got to see our films on Shudder TV, which was such an amazing opportunity I am still so grateful for! Submit to this festival, disabled genre filmmakers -- you won't be disappointed!
