Just up the street from my childhood home was a path through the woods that lead to a murky pond, not unlike the one in my movie “There’s Something in the Lake”. In it lived snapping turtles as big as dinner plates and I used to wonder what else might be lurking below the surface. My love of monster movies began around age 8, with a TV show called Chiller Theatre that came on Friday nights at 11. I used to beg my mom to let me stay up and watch classic horror films from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s like “Creature from the Black Lagoon.”

But sometimes I wouldn’t make it through the whole movie because I’d fall asleep. I’d wake up in the middle of the night disoriented, the movie having long ended, and stumble off to bed.

That’s exactly what happens to Sam, the main character in my film. After falling asleep watching a late night creature feature, she and her friends wake up thinking everything is normal. But Sam begins to notice that things are not what they seem, and the kids soon discover they’re trapped in a monster movie. As dark forces close in they realize the only way back to reality is to face the monster and destroy it.

One thing I love about those older monster movies; they’re like a good roller coaster; plenty of twists and turns but they don’t leave you feeling sick. A fun ride. That’s my hope for this film, which is my first feature. I was blessed to work with some really talented kids on this movie including my daughter Esther Jane Pope. We had a blast on set and when our production wrapped there were literal tears.

If you're up for a good old fashioned monster movie I hope you'll check out “There’s Something in the Lake."
