The Wind and the Whimpering
Confined between man and animal, Toad struggles to understand the justification for his existence. Saturated with the monotony of honest marshland work, his dormant hungers are awoken and he desperately tries to hold together the fraying edges of his identity.

Raised in the New Forest, the strange-hoods and art of rural England were formative in Laurence's growth as a filmmaker. He has written and directed short films, experimental projects for exhibition and online series for the British Comedy Guide. In 2021, he wrote and directed The Wind and the Whimpering, a medium-length fiction which screened across Europe. Laurence directed Tuptuś, a poetry short produced in Poland in 2022 and he is now based in Kraków, in script development for a feature screenplay.
Our actors needed to embody an ever-present confliction, an internalised terrifying truth. A secret which they don’t understand but lies heavily on their sense of self. Despite the constant fear of reprisals from the reality they exist within, our two primary characters take solace in their time together. They have each-other, they have their pleasures and this brings them true relief. The ridiculosity of the marsh permeates through the narrative to the performances, design, lighting and atmosphere and is in some ways quite stark. Together, we made an episode of lunacy with its feet in the mud of English fantasticalism; an absurd abstraction of Victorian literature; a film about closeness and loneliness.
