Moirai, Thread of Life
Set in the distant future, a female astronaut in search of untouched lands finds herself gravitating toward a mysterious force in a strange cave. The viewer follows her through a journey of discovery and understanding as she gets pulled into another dimension, her ‘self’ entwined and connected with the larger fabric of the universe.
The Moirai were the white-robed incarnations of destiny who controlled the metaphorical thread of life of every mortal from birth to death. In this film we reinterpret this metaphor to describe quantum phenomena.
This film is the third in a series of films using intuitively derived design metaphors to explain quantum theories. Southeast Asian fabrics serve as the film’s primary inspiration.
The project is done with the support of the Ministry of Education Singapore, and it will serve as a resource and introduction to how science and quantum theories can inspire artists to create new art experiences Academic Research Fund (MOE AcRF Tier 1 Award RG43/20) ‘Quantum Logos: Developing Alternative Artistic Styles to Communicate Science’ 02/11/2020 - 01/11/2023

Moirai- Thread of life is a visual and auditory experience, with captivating visuals and an ambient soundtrack. The astronaut’s journey is one of self-discovery and exploration of the unknown. She is gradually pulled into a strange and mysterious cave, filled with unknown and inexplicable phenomena. Along the way, she discovers a hidden connection between herself and the larger universe, as if part of her being is entwined with the cosmic forces at work.
The project seeks to use the ancient symbolism found in Southeast Asian textiles to represent the invisible subatomic and counterintuitive concepts found in quantum physics. The project draws inspiration from paradoxes of modern physics theories such as entanglement, quantum superposition, spacetime, wave-particle duality, and their intersection with artistry, intangible heritage, meaning and aesthetics of selected ceremonial textiles Maritime Silk Road, Indonesia (Sumatra). The project does not explain quantum physics through scientific methods, hypothesis or math-based speculations. Instead, the project seeks to illustrate how science and art can intersect and inform one another.
