Director Statement

“Hooked on Illusions is my university graduation film. I hand-animated everything over two years, while I was grieving my father and coming to terms with his sudden death. For me, the surreal story is about making peace with one's past and current situation: The old fisherman is trapped in his desolate world, even his dreams are just nightmares. But after facing his fears while dreaming, he finally finds a door within himself that leads to his liberation.
I animated directly under the camera with two different mediums: the dreams are brightly colored and animated with oil paint on glass. In contrast, the fisherman's world was drawn with charcoal. This direct type of animation allowed me to express my feelings in a completely unfiltered and immediate way.“
