Breaking Waves
On the way to the ocean, the surf is the critical moment where the boat crosses the rippling line towards the open sea.
"Pouca Sorte" (Short Luck) is that of the fisherman that goes to the sea and brings the net empty, and is also the name of the boat of the Art Xávega's (fishing technique) companion in Praia da Tocha beach. A small fishing community in Portugal that despite the modernization and conversion in tourist attraction, still conserves some traditions intact. This is their story.

Paulo César Fajardo was born in Figueira da Foz, in1980, Portugal. Developed various documentary projects as an independent producer and made his directorial debut in 2000 with the short film “Outono/Fall”. Worked as a freelancer camera operator, editor and director for several TV shows for national and international networks. Finished in 2011 his first feature film “Summer Dream” and in 2012 created the web tv BairradaTV. He now works as a freelancer news camera operator and editor for the SIC and SIC Notícias tv news channels.
This film aims to document the last companion of Arte Xávega (traditional fishing technique) in the beach of Praia da Tocha and to alert to the economic and social fragility in which the fishermen live. Arte Xávega is a fishing craft that has fallen into disuse and in a few years it will disappear completely. Praia da Tocha in Portugal was born of a small fishing community and over time has become a resort beach, leaving less and less space for the fishermen.
