Bolour

In the wake of the Taliban's return to power in the summer of 2021, Bolour, a 19-year-old music instructor, was urged by her family to swiftly depart Afghanistan. The one cherished item she insisted on bringing with her was a Robab musical instrument that had been passed down to her from her father and grandfather.

Director Statement

I only make movies about topics that are either very important to me or send me on a journey of discovery. Filmmaking for me is not a job, it's a passion. It's a tool to push boundaries and break taboos. It's a trigger to start having conversations about uneasy topics and to step into uncharted territories of discovery. Discovering myself and the world around me. I have always been interested in the complexity of the human mind and behavior. As a Middle-Eastern female filmmaker, I feel a great responsibility to be authentic and non-judgmental... to represent marginalized communities... to claim my own rightful voice, and to be a voice for those forcefully silenced.
